The Fichi Di Cosenza, or the “Dottato” figs of Consenza, Calabria, have been awarded an E.U. Protected Designation of Origin status (DOP). These figs are prized all over Italy and are the only figs used in our “palloni di fichi” or baked fig balls.
Fig leaf wrapped, then twine-tied, this ball of pressed cooked figs is an ancient and sophisticated delicacy.
The presentation of the fig ball on a cocktail cheese and meat platter has a natural elegance not to be equaled. When serving: cut twine, fig leaf parted open, and delicious figs tumble out-- it is a rustic still life.
