For our family these ring-shaped, anise seed scented breads were ubiquitous to our Easter banquet. They were piled high in a flat basket on the buffet, cut in chunks, and, in our family, often slathered in butter! Wine egg, sugar, butter, and wheat flour are joined in perfect harmony to develop our soft Mama D's Italian anise bread. They are a wonderful accompaniment to Easter frittatas and savory meats. This recipe has been handed down to us from Mama D'Aversa, revered for her culinary skills, and her son Jibby who was our head baker for decades. This is one of the Di Camillo family's historical rites of spring. Welcome to a place at our Easter table.
